Advances in Nanoparticles (ANP) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/anp.2016.51001
Abstract: The cytotoxicity of hydrophobic QDs CdS/CdSe was tested assigning MTT assay on Human Embryonic Kidney cells (HEK-293), breast cancer cells (MCF-7) and Enrichlish Ascitices Cells (EAC). Approximately 65% bio-toxicity was observed in MCF-7 for the core-shell QDs. These QDs may also find effective applications in other optoelectronic devices. CdS/CdSe core-shell hetrostructure quantum dots (QDs) were generated by chemical reaction between the respective chalcogens and cadmium metal salt. Sulphur powder was utilized for CdS core preparation while selenium was extracted from an organoselenium compound to impart CdSe shell layer at a temperature between 150 - 200. So-prepared core-shell QDs showed good optical properties. The particle size was found to be in the range of 3 - 4 nm with spherical morphology and cubic crystal structure.

ISRN Inorganic Chemistry , 2014, DOI: 10.1155/2014/170919
Abstract: In the present work, we report the fabrication of silica nanoparticles embedded polymeric (SiO2 nanoparticles@polymer) composite films for numerous traits like texture, folding endurance, crystallinity, size, thermal behavior, spectral analysis, and bioactivity. Significant facets of bulky, inert, inorganic materials are known to burgeon out due to the high surface area of nanosized particles. Nature and proportion of silica nanoparticles as well as polymers exhibited remarkable impact on the fabrication and quality of casted films. Hydrophilic silica nanoparticulate-PVA films depicted better mechanical properties like thermal plus photo stability. Hydrophobic silica nanoparticulate-PMMA films showed qualities of a robust, active, thermostable, antimicrobial material that could resist extreme storage and processing conditions. Overall, these metal oxide nanoparticle-polymer composite films possess qualities reflecting their potential in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industry. 1. Introduction Presently, inorganic nanoparticulate-polymeric interfaces are evolving as intelligent approaches with miscellaneous applications. Compared to their organic counterparts, inorganic materials resist chemical attack and have good mechanical strength and higher tolerance; hence, they are explored for commercial use [1]. Cefaclor reduced gold nanoparticles coated on poly(ethyleneimine) modified glass surfaces were explored as effective and robust antimicrobial coatings for various biomedical applications [2]. Silver nanoparticles impregnated chitosan films showed fast and long-lasting antibacterial activity [3]. Magnetite nanoparticles functionalized with polymeric composites retained 100% biocidal efficiency [4]. In brief, polymeric scaffolds aid in ease of nanoparticulate fabrication and impart surface alterations along with enhanced activity [5]. Inorganic zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and analogous metal oxides as nanoparticulate systems have received considerable attention for their exclusive features and applications [6]. As the surface area-to-volume ratio of bulk particles increases with decrease in the particle size, inorganic nanoparticles are known to illustrate miscellaneous properties leading to a plethora of activities compared to normal bulk materials. Zinc oxide nanocomposites in thermoplastic polymers showed improved interactions and immense antimicrobial activity [7]. Crack-free titanium dioxide nanoparticles casted on poly(dimethylsiloxane) substrates possessed greater antibacterial effects [8]. Silicates happen to be better inert substrates and

Abstract: Background Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral disease, poses a significant global public health risk. In tropical countries such as India where periodic dengue outbreaks can be correlated to the high prevalence of the mosquito vector, circulation of all four dengue viruses (DENVs) and the high population density, a drug for dengue is being increasingly recognized as an unmet public health need. Methodology/Principal findings Using the knowledge of traditional Indian medicine, Ayurveda, we developed a systematic bioassay-guided screening approach to explore the indigenous herbal bio-resource to identify plants with pan-DENV inhibitory activity. Our results show that the alcoholic extract of Cissampelos pariera Linn (Cipa extract) was a potent inhibitor of all four DENVs in cell-based assays, assessed in terms of viral NS1 antigen secretion using ELISA, as well as viral replication, based on plaque assays. Virus yield reduction assays showed that Cipa extract could decrease viral titers by an order of magnitude. The extract conferred statistically significant protection against DENV infection using the AG129 mouse model. A preliminary evaluation of the clinical relevance of Cipa extract showed that it had no adverse effects on platelet counts and RBC viability. In addition to inherent antipyretic activity in Wistar rats, it possessed the ability to down-regulate the production of TNF-α, a cytokine implicated in severe dengue disease. Importantly, it showed no evidence of toxicity in Wistar rats, when administered at doses as high as 2g/Kg body weight for up to 1 week. Conclusions/Significance Our findings above, taken in the context of the human safety of Cipa, based on its use in Indian traditional medicine, warrant further work to explore Cipa as a source for the development of an inexpensive herbal formulation for dengue therapy. This may be of practical relevance to a dengue-endemic resource-poor country such as India
Situs inversus with cholelithiasis.

Journal of Postgraduate Medicine , 1995,
Abstract: Situs inversus totalis is a form of heterotaxia which is usually detected accidentally while investigating for any associated condition. If undetected, this condition can create a diagnostic puzzle. We report one such case in which situs inversus was associated with cholelithiasis.
Syntax score: The fallacies and remedies—A perspective  [PDF]

Abstract: The syntax score devised as a tool to grade complexity of coronary artery disease with a view to its suitability for PCI or otherwise on deeper introspection is fraught with some inherent limitations and fallacies largely as a result of the variability in coronary anatomy and the fixed nomenclature of the devised scoring system. We, in this special report, bring out the limitations and fallacies in the same and possible remedies presented as a viewpoint which may be useful to the interventional community at large.
Carcinoembryonic antigen: an invaluable marker for advanced breast cancer.
Pathak K,Khanna R,Khanna H,Khanna S
Journal of Postgraduate Medicine , 1996,
Abstract: Serial serum Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels were measured in 150 individuals (50 patients with breast cancer, 50 benign breast diseases and 50 other controls). These levels were correlated with clinicopathological parameters and follow-up information. Serum CEA levels were independent of the primary tumor status, their histology, lymphoreticular response and the patients′ characteristics as well as the age, sex and the menstrual status. However, the nodal status, number of involved nodes and the grade of the tumors had significant influence on the level of serum CEA. Breast cancer patients especially those with metastasis had significantly higher serum CEA levels as compared to the controls and those with localised disease, irrespective of the site of metastasis. These levels were lowered appreciably by the disease regression and were raised or stable during the disease progression. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve showed metastasis to be more frequent in patients with pretreatment serum CEA levels above 25 ng/ml and persistent post treatment CEA levels above 15 ng/ml. Serum CEA level was found to be a valuable prognostic indicator for advanced breast cancer and serial serum CEA levels provided an average lead time of about 3.9 months before the clinical appearance of metastasis.
